Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Experience: Mr. Ken West's background includes 25 years of technology transfer and commercialization experience in both entrepreneurial and large companies in specialty materials, engineering and life sciences fields. He has served in senior sales, marketing, business development and planning positions at a Fortune 200 company, at entrepreneurial companies, one of which is now publicly traded, and as an independent business development consultant.
From 1979 through 1988, Mr. West was employed by FMC Corporation (a Fortune 200 company with defense, specialty machinery and chemical businesses) in a number of product planning and business development positions. From 1984 through 1988 was Director of Marketing and Business Development for a $60 million division that supplied natural-product based chemicals to food, pharmaceutical and industrial markets. In this role, he repositioned two key products, significantly increasing their profitability; launched a new pharmaceutical product in Europe, and was co-inventor of a new patented pharmaceutical tablet binder.
From 1988 through 1995, Mr. West was Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Business Development at Embrex, Inc., a startup company focused on immunology products and drug delivery systems. During his tenure at Embrex, over $40 million of capital was raised from venture capital and public sources (IPO in 1991), and sales grew from a $0 to a $15 million annual rate. Mr. West also established distribution channels in Europe, Japan and Canada and structured two strategic relationships with Fortune 500 partners.
Mr. West was a founder of Biolex, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company based on a novel method for production of pharmaceutical proteins in transgenic aquatic plants. As Biolex's first President and COO, Mr. West led the company's successful efforts in securing first-round financing. To date, Biolex has raised in excess of $30 million in venture capital, employs more than 40 people and has established a number of research and development collaborations with major pharmaceutical companies including Bayer and Centocor.
Since 1999, Mr. West has been a consultant, working on business development projects for a variety of clients in the life sciences field. He specializes in strategic partnering, licensing, market development, business planning and merger and acquisition services to clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, specialty chemicals and advanced materials industries. Mr. West holds a B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a Director of Global Protein Products, a venture capital backed specialty chemicals company and VetInsite, a veterinary software company.
